Tonight's Class A regional basketball game between Grand Haven and Petoskey will be a homecoming of sorts for Buccaneers' coach Steve Hewitt.

Hewitt graduated from Petoskey, coached in the Petoskey system, and has family still involved in the Petoskey school district.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Hewitt, a 1981 Petoskey grad. “I’ve know their coach (Dennis Starkey) for quite a while. He’s been there over 20 years, and he’s a great coach. He’s actually been a mentor to me in a lot of ways.

“If I’ve molded our program after anybody, it’s been his. We’re not going to be exact mirrors of each other, but it will be like playing us in a lot of ways.”

Hewitt spent one year as the seventh grade coach at Petoskey before moving on. His oldest brother, Brent, is a middle school coach at Petoskey and is the Dean of Students at that school. Younger brother Dennis helps coach the Petoskey freshman team.

Hewitt’s third brother, Clark, coached at Harbor Light Christian (just outside of Petoskey) for a number of years.

“It’ll be like a family reunion,” Hewitt said. “I’m sure I’ll know a lot of people there. I’m sure I’ll see some of my old teachers who have since retired. It’ll be fun.”
