Beebe swam a school-record time of 1 minute, 46.31 seconds in the event.

Beebe actually trailed after the final turn, but swam a blistering final 25 yards and finished just shy of the D-II national championship record time of 1:46.03.

Beebe also swam a leg in the Lakers’ 200 medley relay team that was edged at the finish and took second place.

He was joined on the relay by Raphael Santons (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Aaron Marken (Milan) and Michael Griffith (Brighton). They finished in a school-record time of 1:28.49.

GVSU sits in fourth place after the first day of competition, which is taking place in Mansfield, Texas. The national championships wrap up on Sunday.
