Lakers' soccer ties Coopersville in season opener

Spring Lake's varsity girls soccer team began its season with a dominating performance against Coopersville, but couldn't put a ball in the net and settled for a 0-0 tie. "We played well, possessed the ball, and we attacked,' said Lakers' coach Jeremy Thelen. "But I think we got frustrated because we didn't score early. We started taking long-distance shots, which weren't very dangerous. "It's early in the season and we're still a little rusty.'

Thelen was sick early last week, which pushed back tryouts until Wednesday.

“We announced the team on Friday, practiced on Monday, had team pictures on Tuesday, and so we’ve only really had one practice,” Thelen said.

He was particularly impressed with his team’s defense, led by Leeann Latsch.  That group helped limit the action for goalie Audrey Gray, who made just two saves.

Freshman Megan Harken had one of the Lakers’ best chances as she fired a shot that hit the post. The rebound came out to Morgan Gagnon, who couldn’t handle a tricky bouncing ball and hit the shot over the crossbar.

Spring Lake finished with 16 shots on goal.
