The visiting Lakers had a few good offensive pushes early, but could not capitalize.

“We had several chances early but couldn’t put the ball away,” Thelen said. “Then Kelsey broke through with 15 minutes left in the half and scored two goals within six minutes and sent us on our way.”

West Ottawa responded with a goal early in the second half, but Spring Lake answered as Chezney Peel scored off a corner kick from Katie Miedema.

Megan Harken scored the Lakers’ final goal with 30 seconds remaining in the game.

Thelen credited Morgan Gagnon with a strong game up top, including two assists. Annie Cook played well at outside midfield for the Lakers (1-0-1).

The Lakers are off until April 9.

Junior Varsity: Spring Lake scored a 6-1 win over West Ottawa, with Siera Gipson and Kelcea Wilson each scoring twice.
