Haven soccer ties Shores

Grand Haven's varsity girls soccer team couldn't protect a 2-0 lead and settled for a 2-2 tie with visiting Mona Shores on Thursday.

The Buccaneers built a 2-0 halftime lead thanks to goals by Claire Borchers and Lydia Weykamp.

Mona Shores tied the game on goals by Kimmi Al-Shatel and Amelia VanderVelde.

The Buccaneers are now 1-0-1 heading into their Spring Break layoff.

Junior Varsity: Sawyer Overway had two goals and an assist as Grand Haven defeated Mona Shores, 3-0. Amy Wadaga also scored for the Bucs, while Dalton Tuggle and Hanna Landman added assists. Veronica Booth was in goal for the shutout.

Freshmen: Grand Haven opened its season with a 1-0 victory over Jenison on Monday, with Katie Fojtik scoring the Bucs’ lone goal. Defenders Taylor Wexall, Allison Berger and Madison Innes contributed to the shutout.

The Buccaneers then thumped Rockford on Wednesday, 7-0. Amanda Flaquer and Skyler Foulkes scored first-half goals for the Bucs, then Vanessa Cook added a second-half hat trick. Flaquer added another goal while Sahrah Quinn also scored for the Bucs. 

“The girls worked hard today and did a great job working together,” said Bucs’ coach Jaren Soule. “What impressed me the most was how we got the ball wide and had some nice crosses to our teammates, who were in the right spot at the right time to finish the ball.”

BOYS LACROSSE WINS

Grand Haven’s varsity boys lacrosse team scored a tight 10-8 win over Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Thursday.

Grand Haven improves to 2-0 on the season.

In junior varsity action, the Buccaneers edged the Cougars, 5-2.
