Soccer Roundup: SL falls to Grandville

Spring Lake's varsity girls soccer team learned a valuable lesson in Monday's lopsided 3-0 loss at the hands of state-ranked Grandville.

“I realized that we have to play faster,” said Lakers’ coach Jeremy Thelen. “We need to get the ball, pick up our heads, make the pass, anticipate the game.”

Grandville, which is ranked No. 10 in Division 1, jumped out to a 1-0 halftime lead on a breakaway goal past Lakers’ keeper Audrey Gray.

Thelen credited Katie Miedema, Morgan Gagnon and Kelsey Kippe with playing well for Spring Lake, which is now 1-1-1 on the season.


Grand Haven scored a 1-0 win over Reeths-Puffer on Monday.

Taylor DeWitt scored the game’s lone goal, assisted by Lydia Weykamp.

Grand Haven held a 14-7 advantage in shots on goal, and Buccaneers’ goalie Faith Platz recorded the shutout.

Junior Varsity: Grand Haven improved to 3-0 with a 4-0 win over Reeths-Puffer. Veronica Booth recorded the shutout while Maggie LaLonde scored twice for the Bucs. Jen Thompson added a goal and an assist, and Sawyer Overway also scored.
