Soccer Roundup: GH ties HC; Warriors win big

Grand Haven's varsity girls soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie with Holland Christian on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers trailed the Maroons 1-0 at halftime. Grand Haven tied the game when Claire Borchers scored off an assist from Lany Kenny.

“It was an excellent game,” said Grand Haven coach Cor Damhuis, whose team is now 2-0-2 on the season. Holland Christian is 2-0-1.

The Buccaneers conclude a busy week when they take on Muskegon in their O-K Red Conference opener on Friday.

Junior Varsity: Grand Haven downed Holland Christian, 5-1. Sawyer Overway scored three goals while Tessa Bathke and Maggie LaLonde also scored for the Bucs. Jen Thompson and LaLonde had assists, and Veronica Booth was in goal for the win.

Freshmen: Grand Haven’s freshman soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Jenison. Vanessa Cook’s corner kick led to the Bucs’ lone goal, scored by Katie Fojtik.

WMC OPENS WITH LEAGUE WIN

Senior Timera Crosby had a hat trick plus one as host Western Michigan Christian opened its River Valley Conference soccer season Wednesday with a 6-0 win over Granaad Rapids Covenant Christian.

WMC senior Rachel Karsten got things started early for the Warriors when she found the net just a minute into the game. Crosby scored her first goal 15 minutes into the game and her second a minute later.

Karsten added one at the 24-minute mark and Crosby got her hat trick just before intermission to give the Warriors a 5-0 lead at the halfway point.

Crosby added her fourth goal in the second half.

WMC is now 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
