The winning article, titled “GH Girls Win for ‘Psycho’ Dave,”was published Feb. 19, 2011.

The story recounts a life-changing 24-hour stretch for Grand Haven High School girls basketball player Alex Law, whose father, Dave, nearly died after suffering a brain aneurism. Law spent the morning in the hospital visiting her father, who was clinging to life, then took to the court and led the Buccaneers in scoring in their 57-31 win over West Ottawa.

"I went in today and I had never seen him like that," Alex Law said in the article. "I told him I loved him and I was going to play for him. I could see tears coming down his face. It wasn't a hard decision. I knew that's what he'd want.”

Dave Law has since recovered and watched his daughter lead the Buccaneers to the Class A state championship this past winter.

An awards banquet for all MAPEA winners will be held at the Lexington Lansing Hotel on May 19.
