The contest was the Lakes Eight Conference opener for both teams.

“The wind was a big factor,” said Lakers’ coach Jeremy Thelen, whose team is 2-1-1 overall. “We had the wind in the first half and we scored in the first five minutes.”

That opening goal came on a breakaway by Kippe. The Lakers continued to put the pressure on Orchard View’s defense, which held strong until midway through the second half.

TROJANS BLANK TIGERS
Debbie Pekel and Lauren Hazekamp each scored twice and Haylie Hanks added a single goal as Fruitport’s varsity girls soccer team shut out Grant, 5-0.

Hazekamp, Carly Kryfka and Jessica Erny each had an assist for the Trojans, who held a 22-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Lindsey Armstrong made two saves to record the shutout, while the defense of Lena Rance, Tehran Peffley-Routt and Autumn Winger played outstanding.
