Presenting Parnell with his award were Jim Robinson, executive vice-president of Farm Bureau Insurance; and John E. “Jack” Roberts, executive director of the MHSAA.

Parnell will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau.

Farm Bureau Insurance awarded 32 scholarships, proportionately by school classification to students with a 3.50 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average who have previously lettered in at least one sport in which postseason competition is sponsored by the MHSAA.

Parnell was a key member of the Lakers’ varsity tennis team this past fall that finished 14th in the Division 3 state meet. He and No. 1 doubles partner Michael Hartliep earned all-state honorable mention after posing a 26-10 record.

They were Lakes Eight Conference champions; finished runner-up in the regional tournament; and won their opening-round match at the state meet before falling to the No. 1-seeded team from Forest Hills Northern, 7-5, 7-5.
