Later in the day, the Bucs’ soccer program hosted its Blue & Gold scrimmage.

During the football scrimmage, Grand Haven took on several teams, including Fruitport.

The Buccaneers’ offense moved the ball effectively at times, while the defense was sharp, especially against the Trojans.

Fruitport coach Greg Vargas said his team rested a few players, and that caused them to shuffle other players around.

“Defensively, we were fine,” Vargas said. “I was really happy. Unfortunately, it didn’t translate on offense.”

Spring Lake also hosted a six-team scrimmage on Friday.

While football teams have to wait until late last week to open their seasons, Grand Haven’s soccer team opens its season today at Portage.
