Fruitport volleyball falls flat with 1-4 showing at EK

Fruitport is entering rare territory with a near losing overall season record following a disappointing 1-4 showing at Saturday's East Kentwood Invitational.

The Trojans (11-10 overall) battled to a third game in three of its matches, but fell short in each do-or-die chance. They were defeated by Northview (25-19, 23-25, 15-11); Fenton (13-25, 25-23, 16-14); and Forest Hills Central (20-25, 25-21, 15-12).

Fruitport’s lone win came against Parchment in pool play, 25-12, 25-11. The Trojans’ other loss came at the hands of Jenison in two games, 25-19, 25-14.

Setter Breanne Bo had a strong statistical day for the Trojans with 75 assists, nine aces, 12 digs and an impressive 16 kills.

Fruitport had four players with double-digit kills, led by senior Brandie Jones with 39. Francesca Cerniglia and Autumn Winger each added 13.

Jessica Meloche tied for the team lead with nine aces and contributed 18 digs. Jones totaled 23 digs and eight aces to her solid offensive numbers.

GH JV GOES 2-2 AT WEST OTTAWA

Grand Haven’s junior varsity volleyball team finished 2-2 at Saturday’s West Ottawa JV Invitational.

The Bucs were victorious over Holland Christian and Mona Shores, but dropped decisions to East Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Christian.

Autumn Monsma had 20 service points and 12 kills to pace the Bucs. Paige Holman led with 14 kills, while Hannah Landman and Emily Lachman each had 12 digs.

Sophie Stoepker and Anna Wilgenburg combined for 36 assists, and Claire VanWieren and Ally Knoll had eight blocks each.
