GH equestrian takes district title; battles at regionals today

The Grand Haven High School equestrian team captured the District 9 Title last Saturday.

The Buccaneers bested the competition with their season’s highest point total of 149. Ludington was second with 138, followed by Oakridge with 100, Spring Lake with 84 and Shelby with 44.

Senior Stephanie Szymas posted a point total of 49 with three class wins. Senior Kaitlin Brace had 47 points with three class wins, while freshman Olivia Ortiz garnered 46 points with three class wins.

Sophomore Corinna Frings, a German exchange student, is doing jumping for the team and placed second by earning seven points.

Grand Haven totaled 422 points over the season and will move on the regional championships today in Ludington. Grand Haven’s Region D includes the Northwest quarter of the state, including the Upper Peninsula.

The Bucs will compete in four different riding disciplines over two days.
