Mundt's pair of returns for touchdowns leads SL over Fremont

Johnny Mundt had two kickoff returns for touchdowns - an 80-yarder in the first quarter and another that covered 68 yards in the fourth - leading Spring Lake's varsity football team to a 28-14 victory at Fremont on Friday.

The Lakers’ defense also came up big, as they picked off Fremont quarterback Christian Wade three times. The Lakers experienced more troubling news concerning injuries during one of the interception returns, however, as Jake Chittenden was tackled hard to the turf and broke his collarbone. The injury will cost the Lakers’ senior the rest of the season.

Spring Lake built a 21-0 lead going into the half on a 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Mark Williamson and a 56-yard run by senior fullback Cody Berkobien.

Berkobien led the Lakers’ ground game with 109 yards on 14 carries, while Williamson completed 3-of-9 passes for 57 yards.

Wade and the Packers tried to rally in the second half. Wade threw a pair of touchdown passes, but Mundt’s big day on special teams gave the Lakers some breathing room.

Wade attempted 31 passes — but completed only 13 for 144 yards.

A.J. Lisman led the Lakers’ defense with eight tackles. Warber had two interceptions for Spring Lake, which improves to 3-3 overall. The Lakers host Ludington in its Homecoming game next Friday.
