The Titans’ latest triumph came at the Youngstown State Invitational in Bordman, Ohio, on Sept. 17-18. Detroit shot a 309 in the second and final round to finish with a 609 — the third best 36-hole tournament score in school history. It was also good for a five-stroke win over the host Penguins.

Hansen, a Grand Haven High School graduate, rebounded from a slow start to finish with a 159 — good for 16th place overall.

In the Titans’ opening tournament, the Detroit Titans Fall Classic at Hartland Glen Golf Club, Detroit won with a two-round total of 594, blowing away the field and runner-up Youngstown State by 25 shots.

Hansen took fourth overall with a 150, which matched her career best for a 36-hole event.

ADDISON IS BACK ON TOP AT U-M

After struggling during the track and field season, Grand Haven graduate Becca Addison has seemed to rebound in time for her senior season in cross country.

Addison captured first-place honors for the University of Michigan at the University of Kansas’ Rim Rock Classic on Sept. 29 in Lawrence, Kan. Addison clocked in with a season-best 6K time of 20:29.20. She led a group of five Wolverines that each finished in the top 11 spots.

Michigan is currently ranked No. 11 in the country. The Wolverines are back in action on Oct. 13, as they’ll compete at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, hosted by the University of Louisville. U-M’s next meet in the state of Michigan will be at Eastern Michigan University’s Fall Classic, held Oct. 19 in Dexter.

TRIO OF BUCS IN HOPE’S LINEUP

Hope College’s men’s soccer team has been fielding three former Grand Haven High School soccer standouts in its starting lineup.

Freshman goalie Ethan Beswick has been sharing time in goal with junior Ben Lemmen, while junior Matt VanZytveld is a starting midfielder and Nic Heyboer a starting forward. The trio led the Flying Dutchmen to a 2-1 win over Albion College on Saturday, pusing Hope’s record to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Beswick has appeared in seven games with three starts for Hope, and has made 14 saves with a save percentage of .700.

Heyboer has one goal in seven games this season, as well as seven total shots. VanZytveld has started eight games for the Dutch, and has tallied 19 shots, but has yet to find the back of the net.

GAGNON, ST. MARY’S ENJOYING SUCCESS

Freshman forward Morgan Gagnon has helped lead the St. Mary’s (Ind.) College women’s soccer team to its best start after 10 games since the 2004 season.

With its 3-2 overtime win against Rochester College on Sept. 30, the Belles’ record stands a 7-2-1. The Belles are also 4-2 in the MIAA standings and trail Calvin and Alma by a game in the league.

Gagnon, a Spring Lake graduate, has made the most of her five appearances this season with six shots, a goal and an assist.
