The Buccaneers had a defensive lapse on a free kick that allowed the Rams to take a 1-0 lead, then scored the tying goal, only to have it called back because of an offsides penalty.

“We started out strong,” Bucs’ coach Aaron Dean said. “We were connecting passes, keeping the tempo at a pace that worked in our favor. Certainly Rockford is a talented team, and had a few looks, but we were doing all the things we needed to do to make the work in our favor.

“We gave up the first goal, and I think we felt a bit deflated. In time, we responded and got a few looks. In our efforts to push, we took a few risks, and Rockford capitalized on their ability to run and counter-attack. When we let the game slip into their style, they certainly made us pay for it.”

The Buccaneers now turn their attention to the Division 1 district tournament, which begins next week at Buccaneer Stadium. Grand Haven opens against Grandville on Tuesday at 7 p.m., with the winner facing either Grand Rapids Union or Hudsonville on Oct. 18. The district title game is at 4 p.m. on Oct. 20 at Grand Haven.

“We’ve been talking all year about how this is a learning experience and again we’re taking things from this game that will hopefully make us better next week,” Dean said. “The lessons at this point are over and it’s time to start the test.”

Junior Varsity: Grand Haven closed out its season with a 1-1 tie against Rockford. Joe Wisniewski scored the goal for the Bucs, who finished with a 7-3-6 record.
Freshmen: The Buccaneers fell to the Rams, 3-0. Luke Blauvelt had the Bucs’ best scoring chance on the night.
