The Buccaneers placed fifth at Thursday’s Division 1 regional competition at Sonnybrook Country Club in Grandville.
The Bucs shot a 411 on a windy, blustery morning. East Kentwood won the event at 381. Rockford (386) and Holt (389) also qualified for the state finals.
“It was an extremely windy day, and that wind really blew up some of the scores,” said Grand Haven coach Roger Glass, whose team had a slow start to the season but picked it up the last few weeks.
“If you said we were going to finish fifth at regionals at the start of the year, I’d have laughed,” Glass said. “I’m really pleased with how the whole season went, and how the girls progressed.”
Megan Hendrickson shot a 97 for the Bucs, followed by Martha Ramsey with a 98. Hailey Watkins shot a 103, and Kira Glass added a 113.
Glass is the only senior the Bucs lose out of their top five, making the future look very bright for the program that has struggled the past few years.
“The expectation for (the girls), and mine, is to be in the top three of regionals,” Glass said. “We’re only losing one senior in our top five, and we’ve got some girls at the JV level and some younger varsity girls who are going to step up.
“I’m really excited about the coming year, but that’s a long way off. Grand Haven golf is definitely back on track.”
