WMC's Alfree qualifies for state golf finals

Spring Lake resident Abbie Alfree will be the first girl golfer to ever represent Western Michigan Christian at the state finals this weekend.

The sophomore carded a font-family:Arial;color:#222222"> 93 last week at the Division 4 regional at Milham Golf Course in Kalamazoo. It was good enough for sixth place individually overall in the region out of 70 players. 

font-family:Arial;color:#222222">Alfree was also the highest placing sophomore and her score was good enough to qualify her for the state finals this week at Michigan State University.

This is only the second year WMC has offered a girls golf team. The team last week placed ninth out of 14 teams in what was called the state's strongest Division 4 regional.

" color:#222222">Our result at the regional truly was the product of the total team effort over the season, not just the five girls who went to represent us there," WMC coach Scott Alfree said. "This year we had many different players actually play in our matches.  This is because so many gals improved their games so dramatically from last year. 

color:#222222">“We went from winning a match or two last year to winning well over half of our matches this year and we were competitive even in the matches we did not win."
