SL girls cross country runs to league title

Spring Lake's varsity girls cross country team was expected to be the team to beat in the Lakes Eight Conference in the preseason, and the Lakers didn't disappoint, winning the title in convincing fashion following its victory at the final league jamboree at Ludington on Tuesday.

Spring Lake totaled 26 points at the meet, beating out runner-up Fremont by a healthy 24 points. Fruitport was fourth with 115.

“I cannot express enough how proud I am of our entire team tonight,” said Spring Lake coach Aaron Andres. “Though our times weren't our fastest of the season, they ran one of their strongest team races of the season as Ludington's course is quite challenging. It challenges a runner's endurance with a string of hills the last half of the race. All the long runs we do during the summer and on the weekends help shape our victory in races like this. Our team looked strong at the end.”

Spring Lake had 10 runners finish in the top 25, with nine earning all-conference honors. Senior standout Brittany Beeler again led the way, as she was first overall with a time of 19 minutes, 50 seconds. She was one of three first-team all-conference runners, as freshman Erin O’Keefe placed third and sophomore Carlyn Arteaga was fifth.
