The defending Division 1 state finalists scored an inspired 1-0 win over Mona Shores in their Division 1 district championship game on Saturday at Buccaneer Stadium.

With the win, Grand Haven (11-8-1) advances to Wednesday's regional semifinal contest against Portage Central (10-10-1) at Holt High School.

"I think not winning the districts would have made this season a disappointment in a lot of the kids' minds," Grand Haven coach Aaron Dean said. "We've struggled. It has not been an easy year. We've played a lot of tough opponents, so part of it is, we've made it tough on ourselves.

"To get this done, the kids have worked really hard, not just in this game, but in the process of becoming a team. They did it, and I'm proud of them for all the hard work they've put in."

The game's lone goal came just 2 minutes into the game. The Bucs won a throw-in deep in their offensive third of the field. Kennedy Kaufman threw the ball in to Kevin Lacroix, who headed the ball back out to Kaufman. The Bucs' junior then served a ball into the middle, where Willie Bennick was waiting. The senior drilled a one-timer just inside the near post.
