Gobble, gobble: SL sailing team excels at Turkey Leg Regatta

Spring Lake High School sailors took the top two places at Saturday's Turkey Leg Regatta, a meet that features teams from more than a dozen different high schools. The event took place on Spring Lake.

Spring Lake Grey, which featured an ‘A’ crew of David Griswold and Patrick Mahoney and a ‘B’ crew of Oliva Windemuller and Sam Thornsen, took first place with 17 points.

Second was another Lakers’ team, Spring Lake Red, which featured ‘A’ crew Mason Wolters and Max Ingersoll and ‘B’ crew Elijah Locascio and Ingersoll.

That group finished with 22 points.

Spring Lake Black — made up of Mara Strobel-Lanka, Reid Kwiatkowski, Julie Lucas and Kaleb Norwood — took eighth place with 73 points.

Spring Lake White — Rachel Rantanen, Dakota Coulier, Riley Sorber and Jessica Hewitt — placed 12th with 86 points.

Grand Haven’s lone crew of Emma Baty, Sarah Riegler, Avery Hirdo, Alexis Armijo and Breann McKay, placed 15th out of the 20 teams with 110 points.

Other schools participating were Mariemont, Grand Rapids Christian, Traverse City Central, Traverse City West, Traverse City St. Francis, Detroit Country Day, Grosse Ile, East Grand Rapids, Brother Rice, Lottawatta and Traverse City Middle School.
