Area teams earn academic all-state honors

A slew of local teams were recently honored by being named Academic All-State in their respective sports.

Both Grand Haven’s boys and girls cross country teams earned the honor. To receive the award in cross country, teams must finish in the top 20 at the state finals and have a combined grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

The Bucs’ boys met the criteria for the third-straight year. Their combined GPA of 3.67 was ranked 13th in the state, and they finished the Division 1 finals in 19th place on Nov. 3 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Members of the team are Justin Pipple, Will Swain, Turner Sale, Andrew Tafelski, Nick Johnson, Ashkii Wilson and Jordan Diephouse.

The team is coached by head coach John Tarr and assistant Steve Hewitt.

Grand Haven’s girls placed fifth in the Academic All-State listing with a cumulative GPA of 3.872. The Bucs placed ninth as a team at the state finals.

Individually, Roxy Glasser (18th at state), Claire Borchers (28th), and Lindy Vallier (111th) earned individual academic all-state honors.

The team is coached by Scott Przystas and assisted by his wife, Renee.

Spring Lake also had a tremendous showing in Division 2, as they were fourth with a combined GPA of 3.932.

The Lakers took runner-up honors in the Division 2 state finals, the program’s best finish since they captured the state title in 2001. Spring Lake is coached by Aaron Andres.

Spring Lake girls’ golf team also earned academic all-state honors in Division 3. The team, coached by George Bitner, compiled a GPA of 3.9086.
Earning honorable mention academic all-state honors for the Lakers was Katie Marous.
