Four local standouts earn all-state honors in volleyball

To the victors goes the spoils. Grand Haven’s varsity volleyball team — which advanced to the program’s first-ever appearance in the Class A state semifinals last week — was awarded nicely for its postseason success as three players recently earned all-state honors in Class A.

Senior middle hitter Abby Cole was a first-team selection; junior outside hitter Krysteena Davis was a second-team pick; and junior setter Jami Hogeboom was a third-team honoree.
In Class C, Western Michigan Christian senior standout Rachel Bruinsma was a second-team all-state selection.
The all-state teams were selected through the Michigan High School Volleyball Coaches Association.
The 6-foot-5 Cole, who was second in the voting for the Miss Volleyball Award, avearaged nearly 4 1/2 kills and 1.1 blocks per game for the Bucs. She especially elevated her play in the postseason, carrying the Bucs to Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
Cole was also recently named to the Under Armor All America Team, which consists of 100 of the top players from across the country. Cole was a second-team honoree, which is in conjunction with the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Grand Haven’s opponents couldn’t focus all of their attention on Cole, because the Bucs had plenty of other weapons, including the 6-foot Davis. She averaged nearly 2 1/2 kills and 0.7 blocks per game.
Grand Haven’s offense was directed by Hogeboom, who completed her third season on the varsity. She tallied 8.6 assists and 2.0 digs per game.
Western Michigan Christian had a tremendous fall on the volleyball court, due largely to the play of the 6-foot Bruinsma.
The Valparaiso University-bound outside hitter avearged an impressive five kills, 2.7 digs and 1.2 aces for the Warriors, which advanced to the regional finals.
