Spring Lake diver Erik Lukkari picked up where he left off from an outstanding junior season a year ago, as he was victorious in the Lakers’ home-opening meet against the co-op squad from Mona Shores and Reeths-Puffer on Tuesday at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center.

Unfortunately, Lukkari’s win couldn’t carry the Lakers to a win in the final team standings, as they fell, 97-83.

“Erik looked pretty sharp in his first meet,” said Spring Lake diving coach Tom Knight, highlighting his score of 246.85.

Spring Lake managed just three other wins at the meet, including a pair by Jesse Ruter. He captured the 100-yard freestyle in 52.16 and the 100 backstroke in 1:02.16.

Also winning for Spring Lake was Blake Henning in the 100 butterfly, as he touched the wall in 1:01.41.

“Jesse, Blake and Erik really showcased their talents tonight,” said Spring Lake swim coach Jason Lintjer. “All three are really great athletes and have the ability to compete at the next level.

“It’s too bad we couldn’t get the win, but we had some great swims. I’m excited for our next meet and the rest of the season.”

The Lakers are off until Dec. 13, when they travel to Lintjer’s alma mater, Grand Haven, for an always-spirited dual meet at 6 p.m.
