A pair of local boys — Grand Haven’s James Mitchell and Spring Lake’s Gerrit Lyyski — competed in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick state finals, which were held during the Detroit Lions’ home game against the Indianapolis Colts at Ford Field on Sunday.
At the state competition, Lyyski put together a total score of 140 feet, 1 inch, good for second place in his boys’ 6-7 age group. His pass of 51-8 was the best of the day in his age group.
Mithcell finished with a total distance of 236-3, good for third place in the boys’ 12-13 division.
Both Mitchell and Lyyski began their journey to the state finals by competing in the local PPK event on Sept. 9. Both won their age group at that event. In the sectional competition on Oct. 14, Lyyski again finished first with a total distance of 153-3, while Mitchell took first at 294-11. Those results qualified the boys for the state competition.
