Hannah Wilkerson poured in a career-high 22 points, leading Grand Haven's varsity girls basketball team to a 59-51 win over Wayland on Tuesday.
Abby Cole narrowly missed out on a triple-double for the Bucs as she finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocked shots.
Mallory Beswick had five assists while Amanda Merz added three assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Grand Haven led 25-20 at halftime, then saw that lead trimmed to a single point going into the fourth.
“Wayland is a really good team. It was a good test for our team,” said Grand Haven coach Katie Kowalczyk-Fulmer. “They’re a great 3-point shooting team. They hit nine triples against Northview on Friday and they hit seven against us. They kind of got hot in the third quarter and made it 41-40 going into the fourth.”
Kowalczyk-Fulmer was proud of her team for keeping their composure down the stretch against Wayland’s full-court pressure. Wilkerson was a key factor, as she was on the receiving end of several long, press-breaking passes. She scored 12 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter.
“We were able to play keep away the last 3-4 minutes, and get to the free throw line,” Kowalczyk-Fulmer said. “We took good care of the basketball. Our team showed a lot of composure facing a tough press like that.”
Grand Haven junior Taylor Craymer added 11 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Bucs, who improve to 5-0 this season.
Haley Obetts scored 19 points for Wayland, while Presley Hudson added 14 points.
Junior Varsity: Grand Haven suffered a 58-27 loss to Wayland. Anna Gagnon had five assists and three steals for the Bucs, while Amy Kober added four blocks and seven rebounds. Hanna Rinkevicz had six rebounds for Grand Haven (2-3). Sawyer Overway scored six points and recorded three steals.
Freshmen: Grand Haven (3-2 overall) was defeated by Wayland, 44-27. Lauren Strong had eight points and three rebounds for the Bucs, while Lexy King added six points, four rebounds and four steals. Lindsey DeWitt grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.
