As a former travel soccer teammate of the late Mike Herman, Brent Kowalski would often hear his former classmate give words of encouragement to his teammates on the field, such as “I cannot do it without ya,” or “Play with everything you have today.”
As Kowalski sees it now, it was Herman's direct way of getting his teammates to play the game with heart.
Today, Kowalski, a 2008 Grand Haven graduate, is trying to develop the same passion in young soccer players that Herman exemplified so well in his brief soccer carer – a career that was cut short after he was killed in a tragic automobile accident in November 2005.
After being a volunteer coach for several years at the Mike Herman Memorial Soccer Camp in Grand Haven, which was founded by Grand Haven's Jon Dault, Kowalski has started his owner soccer training program with his former friend in mind.
The Heart Soccer Academy is a twice-a-week, four-week skill development camp that stresses four underlying foundational values in the game: love, effort, respect and integrity.
