GH hockey's struggles continue in loss to East Kentwood

Bucs fall to 1-3-1 in O-K Conference Tier 1 action

Grand Haven’s varsity hockey team suffered a 3-2 loss against East Kentwood on Saturday, dropping the Buccaneers’ record to just 1-3-1 in O-K Conference Tier I games.

Both teams finished with 28 shots, but it was the Falcons who were able to get the win thanks to three consecutive goals spanning the second and third periods.

Grand Haven actually jumped out in front on Hayden Gerwig’s unassisted goal in the first period.

East Kentwood’s Alex Birkman tied the game, then Tyler Layle and Austin Adams scored to make it 3-1 Falcons.

Tom Zelenka scored for the Bucs, assisted by Ian Hibbard, but Grand Haven couldn’t get another puck past goalie Zach Casavant, who made 26 saves.

Zach Kooi made 25 stops in goal for Grand Haven, which is now 4-3-2 overall.

The Bucs host Kenowa Hills in a non-conference showdown at the Holland Edge on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
