Fruitport boys' hoops can't cage Orioles

Orioles' girls standout Varenhorst scores 1,000th point in win over Trojans

Fruitport’s varsity girls basketball team did a solid job defensively against Lakes Eight Conference favorite Ludington, holding the explosive Orioles to just 37 points.

Ludington’s defense was even better.

The Orioles held the host Trojans to just six field goals and 13 total points in a 37-13 victory that was highlighted by Ludington star D’Erika Varenhorst scoring her 1,000th career point.

Ludington’s pressure defense forced Fruitport into 29 turnovers.

Debbie Pekel and Francesca Cerniglia each scored six points for the Trojans, but the only other point scored by the entire team was a free throw by Alexis Black in the second quarter.

Varenhorst led Ludington with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Molly Hallead added nine points.

Cerniglia grabbed seven boards for Fruitport, which falls to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Ludington is now 7-1, 3-0 in conference games.

TROJANS’ BOYS COME UP SHORT

Fruitport hung close with Ludington through three quarters, but the visiting Orioles pulled away in the fourth for a 52-42 victory.

Luke Brown led the Trojans with 10 points, while Tyler Fehler added eight points and 11 rebounds. Amilio Flores scored seven, and Caleb Cutler and Travis Grimm each scored six.

Jacob School and Remington Rohrer each scored 10 for Ludington, which is now 5-1 overall and 3-0 in Lakes Eight play.

Fruitport falls to 2-5 on the season and 1-2 in the league.
