GH hockey tops Portage Central, advances in tournament

Bucs to face rival Mona Shores in tourney final today at L.C. Walker Arena

Grand Haven’s varsity boys hockey team advanced to the championship game of the Stan Konrad Memorial Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Portage Central on Friday night.

The Buccaneers will meet Mona Shores in today’s tournament finale at 4:30 p.m. at L.C. Walker Arena.  The Sailors have handed the Bucs two of their three losses on the season.

Grand Haven (7-3-2) got on the board first on Friday as Ian Hibbard scored a first-period goal, assisted by Tom Zelenka and Jordan Klaassen.

Patrick Ferris made it 2-0, assisted by Hibbard and Zelenka, before Portage Central’s Matt Schuen scored in the third to make it a one-goal game.

Portage Central outshot Grand Haven, 32-23, and the Mustangs had just two penalty minutes to the Bucs’ 14.

Zach Kooi made 31 saves for the Bucs, while Colin Campbell stopped 21 shots for the Mustangs.

Mona Shores (10-0) advanced to today’s championship game with a 6-3 win over East Kentwood.
