Grand Haven’s varsity hockey team hoped its third meeting against rival Mona Shores in a month would be the charm.
Instead, the Sailors made it three in a row over the Buccaneers with a wild 8-6 victory in the championship game of the Stan Konrad Memorial Tournament at L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon.
The Sailors jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Brandon Cottrell and Adam Ulfsax, then eventually led 5-2 before the Bucs responded with three consecutive goals to tie the game at 5-5 early in the third period.
Ulfsax and Cottrell put the Bucs’ upset bids to rest, however, as they scored back-to-back goals again, and Reed Hymewich added a goal late to ice the victory for the unbeaten Sailors.
The Buccaneers made a valiant effort to end their losing skid against the Sailors as Tom Zelenka scored a hat trick and provided a pair of assists.
Asa Pellegrom, Ian Hubbard and Bodhi Nicosia also scored for the Bucs. Hibbard had three assists for the Bucs, while Jordan Klaassen and Tyler Ploeg each had two.
Pellegrom and Nathan Schmidt also had assists for Grand Haven, which is now 7-4-2 on the year.
Mark Nalley faced 36 shots, making 28 saves, for the Bucs. Nate Rabbit made 26 stops on 32 shots for the Sailors.
Mona Shores players spent 29 minutes in the penalty box after committing 10 penalties, while Grand Haven committed six penalties for 12 minutes of shorthanded hockey.
Grand Haven returns to O-K Tier I action on Wednesday with a home game against Forest Hills Northern/Eastern. The puck drops at 6:30 p.m. at The Edge Ice Arena in Holland.
