Spring Lake’s varsity girls basketball team played perhaps its best game of the year on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to get past visiting Western Michigan Christian.

The Warriors stormed into Spring Lake High School and scored a 54-48 victory over the Lakers as part of a day-long basketball event between the two schools.

Rachel Bruinsma led WMC with 14 points and 12 rebounds, helping her team up its record to 8-3 on the season.

Jessica Knoll added 12 points, and Vanessa Eekhoff chipped in with 10.

Lakers’ coach Rich Hyde said it was Knoll’s contributions – especially her nine third-quarter points – that was the difference in the game.

“We were attacking them, doing a pretty good job, and we got Bruinsma and Eekhoff on the bench, and Jessica Knoll was their X-factor,” Hyde said. “She’s averaging maybe 4-5 points per game, and she made a 3-pointer and had nine in the quarter. That was really the difference.

“We set ourselves up pretty good with Bruinsma and Eekhoff on the bench, and we weren’t able to take advantage.”

Spring Lake, which falls to 1-10 on the season, enjoyed a nice game from senior guard Molly Miedema, who had five steals and four assists.

Brittany Beeler scored nine points and dished out four assists, and Megan VanDeWeg had a solid evening in the post with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Lakers are off until Friday, when they take on rival Fruitport. WMC also faces a key rivalry game this weekend as the Warriors take on Muskegon Catholic Central on Friday.

Junior Varsity: Spring Lake cruised past WMC, winning 46-8. Saebryn Peel led the way for the Lakers (8-3) with 11 points, while Becca Brummel had eight points and six rebounds. Randi Rice added six steals.
