Like many Grand Haven varsity athletic teams have done over the past seasons, the Grand Haven varsity hockey team will honor those affected by cancer during an upcoming game.

The Bucs’ Cancer Awareness contest will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 23, against Grand Rapids Catholic Central at Edge Ice Arena in Holland. The puck drops at 6:30 p.m.

Grand Haven will be wearing purple jerseys, while GRCC will don pink uniforms. Each team will feature a name on the back of the jerseys highlighting someone special in their lives that has been affected by cancer.

Grand Haven has gathered donations from several local businesses for the cause. Donations will also be accepted at the game and fans will also have an opportunity to purchase a Cancer Awareness T-shirt. All proceeds will be donated to the Van Andel Institute, a Grand Rapids-based facility known for its biomedical research on cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

The Bucs’ captains will present the donation to representatives from Van Andel that will be in attendance at the game.

Grand Haven’s varsity boys and girls basketball team will also show off its purple pride as the Buccaneers will host a Bucs Pride game when they host Rockford on Friday. The boys’ game tips off at 6 p.m., with the girls game to follow.

Following the game, both teams will present their shirts to the person for whom they played that night.
