Fruitport’s varsity boys basketball team bounced back from a heart-wrenching one-point loss to Fremont on Friday by turning in a strong second half in a non-conference victory against Coopersville, 57-44.

The Trojans trailed the host Broncos by a point at the half, 22-21, but Fruitport outscored them 14-7 in the third and 22-15 in the fourth to secure the win.

Fruitport (5-7 overall) had three players in double figures in scoring, led by senior guard Aaron Veihl with a season-high 22.

Fellow senior guard Tyler Fehler chipped in with 15, and 6-foot-4 senior center Amilio Flores dropped in 14.

Coopersville (0-12) was led by Joe Dekkenga’s 12 points.

CERNIGLIA'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE NOT ENOUGH FOR TROJANS' GIRLS

Fruitport and Coopersville combined for 33 first-quarter points, then managed just 37 points total over the next three quarters as the Broncos held on for a 38-31 win over the Trojans.

Coopersville led 18-15 after the first quarter in what looked like it was going to be a high-scoring affair, but the defenses took over after that.

“Each team put up six points in the second, then in the third, the Trojans came out ice cold and shot 1-for-15, and the Broncos took a 33-23 lead into the fourth quarter,” said Trojans’ coach Bob German.

Francesca Cerniglia had a strong showing for the Trojans (5-9), scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Haylie Hanks scored eight, but no other Trojan scored more than two points. Jessica Erny chipped in with six steals.

Shelby DeHaan scored 13 for the Broncos, who are now 8-4 on the year. Quiana Cornelius added 10 points, and Carley Chase scored five, including a 3-pointer.

The Trojans visit Tri-County on Friday.

Junior Varsity: The Trojans suffered a 49-21 loss to Coopersville on Tuesday. Alyssa Veihl had nine points and eight rebounds for the Trojans (3-11 overall), while Morgan Thompson and Grace Carmean each scored four points.
