At last season's Division 1 regional tournament, Grand Haven was able to overcome a pair of double-digit deficits on its way to the program's first trip to the state finals.
The Bucs nearly worked that same kind of magic during Wednesday's Division 1 team districts at West Ottawa High School, but they faced too large of an early hole and too tough of an opponent in Hudsonville.
The Eagles built a 19-0 lead on the Bucs, then withstood two late pins by Grand Haven's Connor Moynihan and Matt Mulcahy to pull out a 34-30 victory. Hudsonville fell to the host Panthers in the finals, 36-27.
“It's just a different scenario this time. We didn't have that extra push,” said Grand Haven coach James Richardson. “We wrestled too tight. We wrestled not to lose instead of being the aggressor.”
