The Ludington girls basketball team established its dominance early against visiting Fruitport on Friday evening and never let up.
The Orioles, who are ranked No. 6 in the latest Associated Press girls’ Class B poll, jumped out to a 20-6 first-quarter lead on the Trojans and coasted the rest of the way in a 51-28 win.
Ludington remains unbeaten in the Lakes Eight Conference at 8-0, while also improving to 14-1 overall. Fruitport falls to 3-6 in the league and 5-11 overall.
Fruitport had trouble slowing down Orioles’ standout center D’Erika Varenhorst, who had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Logan Meeker also had a nice night for Ludington with eight points and eight assists.
Senior guard Debbie Pekel led Fruitport with 12 points, while backcourt mate Jessica Erny had eight.
