GH powerlifters excel at regional competition

Bucs sending four individuals to state finals

Grand Haven’s powerlifting squad turned in a tremendous showing on Saturday during the regional competition at Mona Shores High School.

The Bucs had four individuals qualify for the state finals, which will be held in March at Traverse City West High School. The group advancing includes Aaron Gordon, who took first-place in the 194-pound weight class; Abe Westerman, who took second at 181; junior Kollin Werner, who placed third at 220; and Tyler Foutz, who placed third at 275.

Also competing well for the Bucs in the men’s varsity division were Ryan Maguire, Cody Jonas, Matt VanHeest, Sawyer Jacobs and Juan Becerra.

Grand Haven also had several first-place finishes in lower divisions. Lexie King took top honors in her weight class in the women’s division; and in the men’s junior varsity division, freshman Drew Bruusema took first at 145 pounds, sophomore Chase Pego was first at 181, and sophomore Hunter Bessinger was tops in his 220-pound class.
