Haven bowling team has state meet dreams dashed

It was an overall frustrating day for the Grand Haven boys and girls bowling teams, as the Buccaneers failed to send either of their teams or individuals to the state finals.

The top 10 individuals move on to the finals and the closest Grand Haven got to the cut-off line was sophomore Kaleb Schmidt, who finished 13th overall with a six-game total of 1,142 pins. Fellow sophomore Justin White also was in contention, but finished 20th with 1,114 pins.

The individual champion was Hudsonville’s Mitchell Wybenga, who knocked down 1,214 pins.

In the team scores, Grand Haven placed seventh overall in the 15-team field with a total score of 3,696. Hudsonville was the regional champion with a 3,954, while Mona Shores (3,890) and Grandville (3,855) also qualified for the state finals.

In the girls’ competition, Grand Haven’s top individual showing came from junior Dominique Sauters, who placed 33rd with a score of 924.

Grand Haven placed 11th in the 14-team field with a score of 2,740. Mona Shores won the regional with a score of 3,683, followed by Hudsonville (3,381) and Wyoming (3,370).

WMC QUALIFIES FOR STATE

The Western Michigan Christian boys’ bowling team clinched a berth to the state finals, as the Warriors placed second at their regional held at Northway Lanes in Muskegon.

Ravenna took first place with 3,847 total pins, WMC was second with 3,512 total pins and Niles-Brandywine was in third with 3,455 total pins.

The format was six Baker games and three regular games.

"We were in second place the entire tournament," WMC coach Chuck Krueger said. "We bowled six good Baker games: 203, 146, 170, 183, 156 and 201 for 1,059 pins. They followed with regular games of 817, 830 and 806."

High games were from Jacob Bush with 198 and 197, and Drew Schneider with a 193.
