Bucs’ grapplers start strong at the Palace
Four of the five Buccaneers who wrestled in Thursday’s Division 1 individual state finals came away victorious.
Grand Haven’s Camden Bertucci, Dakota Juarez, Connor Moynihan and Matthew Mulcahy each won their opening match, while Antonio Reyes fell short in his first state finals competition.
At 112 pounds, Bucs’ sophomore Camden Bertucci upped his season record to 41-1 with a pin of Detroit Catholic Central’s Parker O’Brien (43-5).
Bertucci, who finished runner-up at 103 pounds last year as a freshman, will take on Walled Lake Central’s Daniel Shear in today’s quarterfinal round.
At 160 pounds, Bucs’ junior Juarez remained undefeated on the season when he pinned Hartland’s Nate Smith in just 55 seconds. Now 42-0 on the year, Juarez will take on Brother Rice’s Shon Powell (39-2) today.
Moynihan scored a 14-2 major decision over Temprance Bedford’s David Lijewski at 171 pounds. The Bucs’ senior is now 38-2 on the year and will take on Davison’s Tyler Wildmo (36-9) today.
Mulcahy, wrestling at 215 pounds, needed overtime to score a 4-2 win over Trevor Thomas of Davison. Mulcahy is now 39-4 on the year, and will meet Temperance Bedford’s Brandon Sunday (48-1) today in the quarterfinals.
Reyes, a sophomore, is the lone Buccaneer not making a repeat trip to the finals. The first-time participant was pinned by Alex Molloy of Southgate Anderson in the opening round.
Reyes, now 22-20 on the year, meets Sterling Heights’ Drew Martin (48-4) today in the consolation round of the double elimination tournament.
Spring Lake senior Billy Belcher improved his season record to 43-2 on the year with his victory over Tommy Dematio of Ogemaw Heights during the opening round of the Division 2 finals on Thursday.
The Lakers’ heavyweight advances to the quarterfinals, where he’ll meet Joe Rebottaro of Tecumseh (46-9).
Spring Lake’s Shane Skorupski came up short in his opening match, suffering an 18-0 technical fall against Preston Pelham of Tecumseh.
Skorupski falls into the consolation bracket, where he’ll take on Cameron Lee of Lansing Waverly (44-9).
TROJANS’ FIALEK WINS
Four Fruitport wrestlers competed in the Division 2 individual finals, with junior Austin Fialek the only Trojan to win.
Fialek, wrestling at 152 pounds, scored a 3-0 win over Three Rivers’ Shawn Brew. Now 38-7 on the season, Fialek meets Flint Kearsley’s Jordan Tarrence (17-5) today in the quarterfinals of his weight class.
The Trojans’ Alex Foster lost to Nick Pikes of Warren Woods Tower at 125 pounds. Foster will meet Chase Veydt of Parma Westfalia today in the consolation round.
At 130, Tommy Martinez came up short against Alec Ward of Greenville, 3-0. He’ll meet Robert Pope of Warren Lincoln today.
Collin Butler was pinned by St. John’s Ben Whitford at 145 pounds. He’ll take on Vince Bartaway of Trenton in today’s consolation round.
