Buccaneers’ sophomore Camden Bertucci was the top local finisher at this past weekend’s individual wrestling state meet as he placed third at 112 pounds in the Division 1 competition.

Bertucci, one of five Grand Haven wrestlers to reach the individual finals, was coasting through the bracket before getting pinned by Kyle Gillies of Westland John Glenn.

That loss dropped Bertucci into the consolation bracket, where he pinned Taylor Ticknor of Saline in 2 minutes, 11 seconds, before beating Justin Kim of Rochester in the third-place match, 3-0.

The Bucs’ Dakota Juarez also reached the third-place match at 160 pounds, but he fell short, losing to Dean Vettese of Rochester, 8-3.

Juarez, a junior, reached the consolation round finals by scoring a 7-3 win over Carson Whaley of Grand Blanc.

Bucs’ senior Connor Moynihan placed sixth at 171 pounds. He lost in the second round of the championship bracket, then had to battle back with wins over Tyler Petrone of Roseville and Shane Shadaia of Rochster.

Moynihan lost to Derek Hillman of Woodhaven, then in the fifth-place match, suffered a loss against Devan Richter of Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse.

Grand Haven senior Matthew Mulcahy and sophomore Antonio Reyes both failed to place at the state meet.

In Division 2, the Lakers’ Billy Belcher took sixth place in the heavyweight category.

Belcher lost in the second round of the championship bracket, but battled back with a pin of Zaid Abdellatif of Ypsilanti and another pin against Jon Kratovich of Allegan.

Belcher was then pinned by Ben Proctor of St. John’s. That loss dropped the Lakers’ senior into the sixth place match, where he lost a 6-1 decision in overtime to Joe Rebottaro of Tecumseh.

It was the second time Belcher had met Rebottaro at the state meet, and the second time the two heavyweights went to overtime. The Tecumseh senior won both meetings.

Lakers’ senior Shane Skorupski also reached the state meet, but did not place.

A foursome of Fruitport wrestlers reached the finals in Alex Foster, Tommy Martinez, Collin Butler and Austin Fialek. All four came up short in their attempt to place in the top eight.
