Eleven Buccaneers’ swimmers and divers will make their way to the Division 1 state swim meet this weekend in Holland, and the highest hopes rest on the shoulders of diver Casey Carlson.

Carlson, who placed 12th at last year’s state meet, hopes to improve on that finish this year. To do so, he’ll have to clean things up after a sloppy performance in the regional competition on Tuesday.

“Regionals were not as good as I expected,” said Carlson, who placed fifth.

SL OPTIMISTIC ENTERING STATE

Spring Lake made a tremendous charge at the Coastal Conference tournament last weekend, with the Lakers qualifying five athletes for the state meet, bringing their total to six for this weekend’s finals at Eastern Michigan University.

Spring Lake will compete in six different events, including diving, where senior Erik Lukkari has an opportunity to win an individual state title. He was first in all but two meets this season, including a championship in the Coastal Conference.
