Trevor Macnamara scored seven goals, helping the Grand Haven varsity boys lacrosse team thump Mattawan, 16-3, in its season opener on Saturday.
Jeff Olson added four goals while Matt Olson had three goals and an assist for the Buccaneers.
The Olson brothers dominated the face-offs, teaming up to win 16-of-21 faceoffs.
Long stick middie Ryan Maguire led the team in ground balls and played outstanding defense against a strong Mattawan midfield.
Goalie Dan Gignac was solid between the pipes for the Bucs, making 10 saves.
“Mattawan is a very physical and talented team,” said Bucs’ coach Murle Greer. “We executed well in offense by being patient and smart. We also scored goals on all six of our extra-man opportunities.
“The face-off domination helped us maintain control of the game. We also cleared the ball extremely well. This was a great way to begin a very challenging season.
“We are very proud of our players today.”
The Buccaneers will host Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Tuesday.
Junior Varsity: Grand Haven scored a 5-4 win over Mattawan. A.J. Dahlman scored three goals while Cole Kramer also scored for the Bucs. Austin Shiflette had two assists, and Tristan Graoh made six saves in goal.
