Trevor Macnamara scored seven goals, helping the Grand Haven varsity boys lacrosse team thump Mattawan, 16-3, in its season opener on Saturday.

Jeff Olson added four goals while Matt Olson had three goals and an assist for the Buccaneers.

The Olson brothers dominated the face-offs, teaming up to win 16-of-21 faceoffs.

Long stick middie Ryan Maguire led the team in ground balls and played outstanding defense against a strong Mattawan midfield.

Goalie Dan Gignac was solid between the pipes for the Bucs, making 10 saves.

“Mattawan is a very physical and talented team,” said Bucs’ coach Murle Greer. “We executed well in offense by being patient and smart. We also scored goals on all six of our extra-man opportunities.

“The face-off domination helped us maintain control of the game. We also cleared the ball extremely well. This was a great way to begin a very challenging season.

“We are very proud of our players today.”

The Buccaneers will host Grand Rapids Catholic Central on Tuesday.

Junior Varsity: Grand Haven scored a 5-4 win over Mattawan. A.J. Dahlman scored three goals while Cole Kramer also scored for the Bucs. Austin Shiflette had two assists, and Tristan Graoh made six saves in goal.

Thanks for the GH sports coverage. Living 177 miles from my son, Trevor McNamara, paper spelled his last name wrong, its my way of hearing about him and his lacrosse team results and the rest of Grand Haven HS sports teams. Keep up the good coverage, just work on the spelling. THANKS!
