Seven different players scored goals as the Lakers’ varsity girls soccer team mercied Fremont, 8-0, on a soggy but mild evening at Spring Lake Middle School.

“It’s always fun playing in the rain,” said Lakers’ sophomore Mariada Gezon, who scored on a beautiful breakaway goal to put the Lakers on top 7-0.

Moments later, the Lakers finished off the Packers when Saebryn Peel hit a corner kick that skipped off the hands of Fremont goalie Hailey Twigg and into the net with 17:22 remaining.

Gezon said it was great to finally play a game in weather above freezing.

“It was tough because our first three games got canceled, then right away, we played against Grandville in a game that was rainy and cold.”

The Lakers got off to a fast start against Fremont on Monday and never slowed down.

They opened the scoring when Sierra Gipson set up Kelly Hoffius for her second goal in as many games.

Molly Miedema assisted on Leeann Latsch’s goal to make it 2-0, then Maya Denslow scored, assisted by Hoffius, to make it 3-0.

Peel then scored from Gipson to put the home team ahead 4-0 at halftime.
