Grand Haven’s varsity softball team saw its bats heat up and its defense come together in a doubleheader sweep of Godwin Heights on Friday.
The Buccaneers won the opener, 8-4, thanks to a strong showing by sophomore pitcher R.J. Morrow. She struck out nine and walked just three over seven innings of work.
Grand Haven’s defense was rock solid, committing just one error.
Morrow had two doubles, while Katelyn Messer and Jordan Buckingham each added two hits for the Bucs.
Messer, Kaylee Hartwell, Morrow and Buckingham each drove in runs.
In Game 2, Grand Haven won 13-5, with Hartwell and Morrow teaming up for the win. Hartwell fanned six batters and walked five over four innings, while Morrow added six strikeouts and three walks in three innings.
Defensively, the Bucs committed just two errors.
Louisa Johnson banged out an inside-the-park home run and added a triple and a double as she came up a base hit short of the cycle. She drove in three runs.
Messer added a single, a double and a triple, while Buckingham added two singles and a double.
Audrey Boersen had two base hits, while Messer and Cheyenne Ray each had an RBI. Messner stole four bases, and Buckingham added three swipes.
Grand Haven, now 4-6 on the year, takes on Rockford and Hudsonville in O-K Red games next week.
