Grand Haven varsity coach Jaime Franson said the Bucs are getting close to securing their first win in the O-K Red Conference, but the Bucs are not quite there yet.

The Bucs won three of four doubles flights on Monday at Grand Haven High School, but saw their singles flights come up empty in a 5-3 loss to Grandville.

Franson said she continues to be impressed with her No. 3 and 4 doubles teams, which are both undefeated. Lauren Kruggel and Allison Cotter won by a 6-0, 6-2 score against Grandville, while Josie Hendrickson and Nikki Birkett scored a 6-2, 7-5 win.

Grand Haven’s other win came at No. 2 doubles, where Adi Smith and Melissa Eveland dropped the first set, 2-6, but rebounded with 7-5 and 6-3 wins.

“Adi and Melissa made a few key adjustments after their first set that worked and helped them earn a win in three sets,” Franson said.

The No. 1 doubles team of Maggie Ginocchio and Olivia Reed battled hard, but fell 6-3, 6-3.

Each of the Bucs’ singles players — Erin Staal, Meghan Hendrickson, Gretchen Kelly and Ellery Murphy — lost in straight sets.

“Grandville showed strong determination and poise in all the singles flights,” Franson said. “They compete well.”
