Kendra tops 17 feet in long jump for GH girls

A steadily improving Grand Haven boys track team fell short at Grandville on Tuesday, 89.5-47.5. 

The Buccaneers’ pole vaulters had a great night, sweeping the event. Brandt Gruizinga led the way as he cleared the bar at 13 feet. Austin Schield was second at 11-6, and third went to Corey Vanderlaan at 11-0. 

Taking individual firsts for the Bucs were seniors Jack Clark in the 400-meter run in 53.43 seconds and Justin Pippel in the 3200 run in 10 minutes, 4 seconds. 

The 400 relay team of Gruizingz, B.J. Nahal, Aaron Cummings, and Schield nipped Grandville with a time of 46.76.

Cameron Dennings placed second in the high jump at 5-7.

Nahal and Mac Carter were second and third in the long jump, going 19-2 and 18-6, respectively.

Carter also picked up a second in the shot. 

Schield and Mike Schroeder were second and third in the 200 dash, while Turner Sale battled to a third in the 3200 run with a 10:32.

Joey Abbott picked up thirds in both hurdle races.

GH GIRLS FALL TO ‘DAWGS

Despite five first-place finishes and a strong evening in field events, Grand Haven’s girls track team fell to Grandville on Tuesday, 86-51.

The Bucs had several impressive performances, including senior Grace Kendra topping the 17-foot barrier in the long jump for the first time this year. She won the event at 17-2. She also won the pole vault at 10-6 and anchored the winning 400 relay team that also featured Ozette Ostrow, Maggie Lalonde, and Mikaela Kroll.

Senior Kira Glass had a personal best throw of 28-9.5 in the shot put, which was good for third, while Maddie Draper won the high jump at 4-9.

Other notable personal records was Jaycee Wise’s throw of 75 feet in the discus, and Malea Teerman’s time of 2:30.2 in the 800.
