Emma Gilbertson is coming off quite the memorable week for the Wheaton College women’s track and field team.
The Spring Lake graduate, who is a junior distance runner for the Division 3 school located in Wheaton, Ill., set two school records in a span of seven days.
Gilbertson’s impressive stretch began on April 20 at Wheaton’s Don Church Twilight Meet, where she set a new record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10 minutes, 1.06 seconds. The previous record of 10:07 was established in 1988.
Gilbertson added her name to the record books again this past Saturday, but this time in her home state.
Competing at Hillsdale College’s GINA Relays, Gilbertson ran to finish of 36:01.08 in the 10,000-meter run, which set a new Wheaton record by about three seconds.
Her time was also the ninth-fastest in Division 3 this spring, giving Gilbertson a strong chance to compete in the NCAA Division 3 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the event. That meet will be held May 23-25 in La Crosse, Wisc.
Before that, Gilbertson will look to shine at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships this weekend, where she hopes to lead the Thunder to a league title.
GH REENDERS ADDS TO STELLAR SPRING
Earlier this spring, Grand Haven graduate Danielle Reenders established a new school record in the javelin at Trine University.
Reenders added another milestone to her strong senior season, as she was recently named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
Reenders earned the honor after recording a throw of 122 feet, 11 inches at Hillsdale College’s GINA Relays on Saturday. The throw was good for a third-place finish for Reenders.
Her school record throw in the event was set on March 28 at 124-9.
Reenders will get a chance to showcase her skills much closer to home beginning today at the MIAA Field Day, which is hosted by Hope College. The league championship meet concludes on Friday.
