Grand Haven’s varsity tennis team placed third out of six teams at Saturday’s Holland Invite.

“This tournament had many tough teams,” said Grand Haven coach Jaime Franson. “There were a lot of three set matches in all the flights.”

Traverse City Central won the event with 42 points, followed by the host Dutch with 31 and the Bucs with 30. East Kentwood, Zeeland East and West Ottawa’s junior varsity team rounded out the field.

The Bucs had three flights finish runner-up, including No. 3 singles player Gretchen Kelly, who had her best stretch of play this season. The No. 2 doubles team of Adi Smith and Melissa Eveland and the No. 3 doubles squad of Allison Cotter and Lauren Kruggel also finished second.

“First and second doubles played amazingly together and are really learning a lot about how to play together on tough matches,” Franson said.

SL WINS JENISON INVITATIONAL

Aided by a first-place sweep by its doubles teams and a 2-0 showing from No. 1 singles player Lenka Pousova, the Spring Lake varsity tennis team captured top honors at the three-team Jenison Invitational on Saturday.

Spring Lake won the event with 12 points, Grandville was a close second with 11 and Jenison had one.

Pousova won both of her matches in straight sets, while No. 2 singles player Roxane Stroebel and No. 4 Meryn Campbell each went 1-1 on the day.

Spring Lake coach Cathy Layson highlighted Stroebel’s tough win over Jenison’s Kayla Cox, a 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 victory that was determined by a super tie-breaker.

The Spring Lake sweep at doubles was turned in by two wins apiece by Madison Khem and Faith Lee at No. 1; Jori Henderson and Stephanie Sabo at No. 2; Maddie Parker and Audrie Dalman at No. 3; and Rachel Briegel and Megan Oostinde at No. 4.
