Some clutch hitting by Hayden Modaff helped Grand Haven’s varsity baseball team score a pair of tight victories over visiting Holt on Saturday.
In Game 1, the Buccaneers pulled out a 4-3 victory thanks to a walk-off single by Modaff.
John Wickey earned the win, going all seven innings.
Jeff Stevens was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while recent call-up Nathan Bonter was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jared Kelley also swung a hot bat as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
In Game 2, the Bucs raced to a 6-0 lead and held on for a 7-6 victory.
Modaff again delivered with a one-out double to score Connor Grimes for the winning run.
Ty VanWieren earned the win with 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Adam Carlisle.
Bonter had another nice game offensively, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. VanWieren was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run, while Cody Jonas went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Tanner Jonas had a hit and scored a run, while Jeff Stevens drew three walks, scored once and drive in a run.
Junior Varsity: Grand Haven split a doubleheader with Holt, losing 4-3 in eight innings before winning 10-3. Ethan Styck and Garrison Mast, both moved up from the freshman team, came up big for the Bucs. Styck threw a solid game in the opener, and Mast added three hits and two RBIs. Johnny Miller earned the win in Game 2, while Elliot Martin, Taylor Bessinger and Jaob Koster each made diving catches in the outfield. Kostner went 3-for-4 with two doubles.
WMC BASEBALL SCORES WIN
Western Michigan Christian’s varsity baseball squad defeated Onekama Saturday, 12-2 in six innings.
Matt Vanderploeg pitched the entire game for the Warriors. He struck out four and allowed three hits.
Logan Waller had a single and a triple while Jared Varnado had a single and a double for WMC. Austin Sandin and Eric Bourdo each had a pair of singles.
“We played extremely well defensively and hit the ball fairly well. We continue to play better every game,” WMC coach Darin Waller said.
