Baseball roundup: Grimes' complete game helps Bucs split with 'Dawgs

Grand Haven’s varsity baseball team split an O-K Red Conference doubleheader with Grandville on Tuesday.

The Buccaneers dropped their opener, 4-1, despite a solid game on the mound from John Cahalan.

In Game 2, Connor Grimes pitched all seven innings, leading his team to a 3-2 victory.

Grimes allowed just two earned runs on his way to the win.

Ty VanWieren, Chad Mattson and Jeff Stevens each pounded out doubles for the Bucs.

In the opener, Nathan Bonter had the Bucs’ lone RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Grand Haven travels to Grandville to face the Bulldogs on Thursday.

TROJANS SWEEP ORIOLES

Fruitport swept a pair of games from Lakes Eight foe Ludington, winning 8-3 and 12-4.

In the opener, Travis Grimm threw an outstanding game, going seven innings and striking out eight while not issuing a walk. He allowed just four hits and one earned run.

Kolin Lakatos had three hits while Andrew Slocum, Mitchell Reyes and Alex Bowen each had two hits.

In Game 2, Tyler Fehler and Mitch Ferguson teamed up for the win on the mound, striking out a combined eight batters.

The Trojans banged out 15 hits, including four by Slocum. Reyes, Bowen, Jacob Brees and Brandon Lee also had multiple hits for Fruitport. Austin Curtis reached base four times — he was hit by a pitch three times and walked once.

The Trojans are now 9-5 overall and 5-3 in league games.
